Senuna

Goddess of The River Cam

I had been working with her a lot when the wheel began its formation, so thought I knew Senuna well, but placing her in May changed how I understood her.
May begins with something important, to us and to our ancestors: Beltane.
The festival of life, fertility and celebration. Senuna fits this energy perfectly, but not in the way you might expect. She's not wild, nor chaotic, nor overwhelming.

Senuna is… joyful. There is a lightness to her, a sense of ease.

When I first clearly encountered, I saw her standing in a natural setting, near to water and to trees. There were birds. Initially I thought they were just generic birds, something symbolic. But when I looked more closely, they were kingfishers - bright, quick, precise.
Kingfishers belong to the water, but move through the air. One of them came to rest on her shoulder, then moved to her hand.

Now you can interpret that however you like. But what stayed with me was the feeling.

She was not distant, nor was she demanding.
She was balanced, present. And around her, life continued. People walking. Dogs running. Children playing in the water. At first, I found that distracting. I thought, 'this is a sacred space. Shouldn’t it be quiet? Shouldn’t it be respected?'
But the response I got was immediate. 'This is their space too.'
In that moment, Senuna reminded me that the sacred is not separate from life.
It doesn’t require silence or stillness. It exists also within movement, laughter, ordinary moments.

This is Senuna’s gift. She doesn’t ask you to step away from the world, instead, she asks you to recognise the sacred within it.

This makes her offerings significant. Gold, silver, crafted objects.
Not because they are materially valuable, but because they represent a relationship.
People came to her, they felt something, and they responded.
They did not do so out of obligation, but did so out of connection.
And that, to me, is one of the most powerful forms of devotion. Not driven by fear or duty, but out of love.
And that is aligned perfectly with the energies of May. Life returning - but life being enjoyed. Growth, alongside presence.
In a world always pushing us to more; more achievement, more output, more expansion; Senuna offers something different.
She reminds us that it is simply enough to be here.
